Walt Disney Studios becomes first studio to make $7 billion at box office in one year following 'Rogue one' success

Following the huge opening sales for Star Wars movie -Rogue one, Walt Disney has officially become the first movie studio to gross $7billion at the global box office in one year. The record was previously held by Universal Pictures, who raked in the sum of $6.89 billion in 2015, but Disney’s productions with Marvel and Pixar Animation put the movie studio ahead of Universal pictures,as Disney made $2.7 billion at the box office domestically and another $4.29 billion abroad from Jan. 1 to Dec. 18.

The movies that earned the highest for Disney in 2016 include “Captain America: Civil War” and “Finding Dory,” bringing in $1.15 billion and $1.028 billion worldwide respectively. While the other three movies that raked in enough earnings are “Zootopia,” “Jungle Book” and “Doctor Strange.”X Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement on Tuesday:

“This historic achievement is possible because all of our film studios are bringing their absolute best to the table, telling great stories of all kinds that resonate with audiences across borders, gender, and generations,” 

“These films work because each one has not only something for everyone, but everything for someone. It’s our honor to be able to create these experiences for audiences, and we’re thankful to them for continuing to come out to the theater with us.”

Rogue one raked in an impressive $290.5 million in it's opening weekend at the Box Office.
